Vernier compass, dating from the late 18th century, used in topographical land surveys. Instrument is brass with silver dial. Level on either side of dial at right angles to each other. Dial marked "Gregg & Rupp, New York" In box 15 1/2" x 7 1/2". This instrument takes its name from Pierre Vernier (1580-1637), a French mathematician and inventor, who developed fractional scale settings for instruments.
