Octant, by George Grover; vernier; ivory knob at center of frame fit on top of pencil; Ebony frame; ivory nameplate marked "GEORGE GROVER/ 1783" with 3 rosettes on each side of name w/those on left marked over "GEOG"; limb ebony, scale inlaid ivory graduated -5 deg. to 95 deg. by 1 deg. subdivided to 20'; index arm ebony w/brass end; ivory vernier reading to 10'; index mirror; adjustable horizon add'l info on main card. In wooden box with maker's[?] name "H. Gattey, No. 205 North Water Street near Beek'n Slip, N.Y." and inscription inside "A quadrant [sic.], property of Capt. J. T. Sterry and often used by him, etc."
