Ebony and brass octant in an oak step-case, c. 1790. Octant has an ivory scale and maker's plate marked: Crichton London /, and also an ivory pencil top and plate on reverse. Case label: "SAMUEL THAXTER & SON,/ ...NO.125 / STATE ST. BOSTON./ . . ." Case: 13 1/2" longer side x 4 1/16" high.
