Sextant belonging to Captain James A. M. Earle, Master of whaling ship CHARLES W. MORGAN during nine of her voyages between 1898 and 1908; Ex-Barbara Johnson Whaling Collection. Plaque on case reads, "Sextant of Captain James / Earle Master of Whaling Ship / Charles W. Morgan 1840-1921". Label from J. Sewill attached to the interior lid, advertises J. Sewill's 1862 International Exhibition accolade. Sextant made by Spencer, Browning & Co.; maker's mark etched into arc. Piece of wood securing arms of sextant has detached from the bottom of the case, could be reattached. 3 shade tubes and telescope piece included inside. Case overall: 5 x 13 1/8 x 11 in.
