Wooden model of a Makah Indian canoe. The bow has simply carved animal head with orange beak and black eyes, it's stern is painted orange, and elevated with a squared off top. Printed in ink on the inside of the model: "INDIAN CANOE/ MADE BY DOCTOR/ MORGAN FORBE(?)/... NATION/ NEAH BAY/ WASHINGTON/ MARCH 31, 1910." This model was carved by Young Doctor (ca. 1851-1934), a member of the Makah Tribe. Young Doctor was a carver, fisherman, and ceremonial leader among his people. The Makah Tribe was located on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, southern Nootka.
