Model of British sloop-of-war PORCUPINE shown ready for launching, partially rigged with flag masts only. Model is probably contemporary, was purchased at an auction in New York in 1933, and was restored by Captain H. Percy Ashley of New York. Model is of the carved type, with gilt lion figurehead, and 24 brass guns. From fore to mizzen, the flag masts carry the Admiralty Flag, the Royal Standard, and the Union Jack, while the British Red Ensign flies from the stern. The bottom of the vessel is painted ivory, while the topsides and bulwarks are painted red, blue, buff and natural. Set in glass case with brass trim, attached to table. The PORCUPINE was built on the Thames in 1776 by Sir J. Williams. Length of gun deck, 114', length of keel, 96', beam 31', depth 10', tonnage about 521 tons, crew 160, guns, 20-9 pounders on main deck, and 4-6 pounders on quarter deck.
