Model of American ketch MERCURY - 12 guns; Captured by H.M.S. VESTAL and FAIRY September 10. 1780. The MERCURY had sailed from Philadelphia carrying the Minister to Holland and important dispatches including a secret treaty with Holland, which, although thrown overboard, failed to sink and were recovered by the British. The vessel was ketch rigged with main and mizzenmasts and armed with 12 six-pounders. She was 135 tons, gun deck 72.5', length of keel for tonnage 60.2', beam 20.5', depth of hold 8.8'. Scale 1" - 48".
