Model of the U.S. frigate RALEIGH. RALEIGH was designed by James H . Hackett and built by John Langdon, at Rodman's Wharf, Portsmouth, NH. She was
launched on May 21, 1776, and was one of the 13 ships built that year for the first U.S. Navy. Thomas Thompson was appointed her captain on June 6, 1776. She was captured on September 27, 1778 by the British, who put her into dry dock at Portsmouth, England in 1779, where they drew her lines.

This model was probably made by Charles G. Davis, whose craftsmanship remains an inspiration to model builders today.
