Typewritten on piece of paper accompanying photograph "We Americans have seen so many pictures/ of bricks that they have lost their meaning,/ like units of billions of dollars. But each/ brick, each ruined building, is an individual/ tragedy./ These pictures were made ten years after/ the guns first fired on this, the first city assaulted. Here, in the dead shells and/ twisted wreckage of human hopes, sprout the/ seeds of new destruction./ This is Danzig on the Tenth Anniversary/ of the beginning of World War II/ These are the visible scars.".
