Canada's Cup Race

1896-08-25 to present

First race intiated by Toledo Yacht Club and accepted by Royal Canadian Yacht Club who built CANADA for the race and won the race. On January 16, 1897 the cup was deeded to the Royal Canadian Yacht Club by CANADA's crew and named after the vessel: Canada's Cup Race. Race rules state the races is a: "perpetual international [freshwater] challenge cup for friendly competition between sailing yachts representative of yacht clubs of the two nations bordering on the Great Lakes." A total of 17 races are held for the Cup. The races are run every other year, intially by boats in the 35ft corrected length class, then in the 40 ft waterline class, and in 1904 the 30 ft LWL measurement restriction was enacted.
