Desolation Island is one of the main islands of the Kerguelen Islands in the subantarctic zone of the Indian Ocean. 100 miles long, of volcanic origin, with deeply indented coast with numerous peninsulas, capes, and fjords. It was a convenient anchorage for whalers and sealers.
