Decorative half model of the ARETHUSA with wooden sails, mounted on a board 16" x 12". Painting was done by Helen Williams, the carving by Captain McCoy, owner and master who landed 170,000 cases of whiskey along the American coast. During Prohibition, Captain McCoy earned the reputation of bringing in the best liquor, hence the expression "The real McCoy". The largest fishing schooner ever built at Essex, Massachesetts, she was built by Tarr & James, in 1907, and considered a perfect example of her type. She was lost by her British owners off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1929. Approx. dim. of vessel: 114' long x 25.6' beam x 12.5' draft, gross tonnage 157. Scale of model : 1.16" to 1'.
