Metal life car from U.S. Coast Guard Light station at Watch Hill, RI; used for hauling shipwrecked people to shore; double ended, completely closed in, painted white; oval brass builder's marker on each end "T F ROWLAND/ BUILDER/ CONTINENTAL WORKS/ GREENPOINT/ BROOKLYN, N Y"; Thomas Fitch Rowland (b. 1831, New Haven, CT) built the MONITOR (launched in 1862), the first floating battery with a revolving turret, at the Continental Iron Works Brooklyn yard; the company closed in 1949.
