Japanese jingasa, a style of head covering dating from late Edu (1603-1868) period, as worn by lower ranked samuri in execution of civil duties (not in combat); a circular, very shallow profile of light weight wood (possibly paper mache), finished in dark brown lacquer; remnants only of interior crown padding remain, a single, thin woven tie remains attached; decorated with four red detailed and dimensioned insects (grasshopper, butterfly, cricket or cicada and moth) symbolizing times of year, luck and happiness; a gold circular band, 3 5/8" diameter (band 5/8" wide) fronts the lacquered surface, possibly a family crest or mon; underside is gold lacquered.
