One product of the industrial revolution in Great Britain was �ironstone� crockery manufactured in Staffordshire and elsewhere. An inexpensive alternative to fine Chinese porcelain, it was produced in popular shapes and often colored with transfer patterns. After making an ocean passage, such crockery could be found on tables throughout America by 1860. One popular early form was the �Liverpool jug,� often decorated with maritime scenes like this one once owned by a family in the port of Salem, Massachusetts.
