Dewey (1837-1917), an 1858 graduate of the Naval Academy, fought in the American Civil War, but he is best remembered for his role as commander of the Asiatic Squadron in the Spanish-American War. He was instrumental in the American defeat against the Spanish and Admiral Montojo at Manila Bay on 1 May 1898. Seven American vessels captured the port of Manila without losing any American lives, and Dewey was promoted to rear admiral ten days later.
