Commemorative silk scarf honoring Admiral George Dewey. White silk framed in a red and white striped border. Has corners with blue squares, each corner with rows of stars. Center of scarf has a portrait bust of Admiral Dewey in military dress (hat not illustrated). Pictured above Admiral Dewey's head is an eagle holding a banner "OUR GEORGE. HE'S ALL RIGHT." Pictured below Dewey's portrait are crossed flags that read "Rear Admiral George Dewey, U.S.N./ THE HERO OF THE MANILA FIGHT."
Dewey (1837-1917), an 1858 graduate of the Naval Academy, fought in the American Civil War, but he is best remembered for his role as commander of the Asiatic Squadron in the Spanish-American War. He was instrumental in the American defeat against the Spanish and Admiral Montojo at Manila Bay on 1 May 1898. Seven American vessels captured the port of Manila without losing any American lives, and Dewey was promoted to rear admiral ten days later.
