Photograph; composite; center oval photograph of starboard view of sidewheel steamer BLOCK ISLAND at Norwich and Worcester Wharf, Norwich, CT.; photograph surrounded by nine smaller oval portraits of the crew, one at bottom left identified as Chief Engineer Van Wort. Mounted on board. Attributed to J. Weeks, Norwich, CT., ca. 1883. From 1882 to 1915 New England Navigation Co. operated BLOCK ISLAND as an excursion steamer from Norwich to New London and Block Island with stops at Noank, Mystic Island, Stonington and Watch Hill. 1915 to 1930 she served as boarding house and mess hall for the company in Newport, R.I. In 1930, BLOCK ISLAND was towed to Dyers Island and burned.
