Punched paper needlework motto, "The Lord Will Provide"

punched paper needlework motto

NEEDLEWORK
paper; textile; wood
8-5/8 x 21 in.

Framed punched paper needlepoint motto, "The Lord Will Provide"; yarn used was variegated red, solid green and solid red; blue visible as the pattern markings behind losses in the embroidery. This is an early example of a printed pattern, and the use of paper rather than linen made this type of needlework affordable to many. The text usually expressed a Christian value, scriptural quotation or an ideal worthy of display in the home. Patterns were included in popular women's magazines and became so ubiquitous as to be considered 'needlework for the uneducated' by affluent Victorian women.
