Telescope, brown leather, sewn cover, brass fittings. 4-strand braiding around either end. Donor supplied this information from another party: "I believe that the spyglass which you are sending to the Mystic Museum was given to Prof. Alexander Dallas Bache by the American polar explorer Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857). As head of the Coast Survey, Bache was instrumental in sending Kane on an expedition to find the lost British explorer Sir John Franklin, in 1853. Kane did not find him, but apparently presented the spyglass to Bache on his return."
