Astor Cup

Astor Cup trophy; large sterling silver two-handled cup on foot; silver-gilt interior. Base is 4-cornered; 4 sea dragon's heads. Body of cup is covered w/sea nymphs, mermaids, water-god, putto astride horse; all reminiscent of Botticelli; in high relief; piece has been cast to give the appearance of water and waves; rim rolls out in wave-like manner. One handle is Neptune w/mermaid on his shoulders; other, mermaid w/cherub on her shoulders. Front has engraved: "ASTOR CUP./ AUGUST1899./ WON BY/ COLUMBIA/ FROM/ DEFENDER." Bottom has marks "(underline)/ STERLING/ A 7496/ 18 PINT".
