Oil painting on canvas by Charles Robert Patterson; frigate USS RANDOLPH entering harbor at Charleston, SC, flying 13-star American flag; 2 vessels & lighthouse in background. Given in memory of Clarence Hascy Young by his children. Following history appears on back of frame: U.S.S. RANDOLPH, 32-gun frigate built for the Navy 1776. Dismasted (sic.) in a gale 2/1777. Captured H.M.S.TRUE BRITON, 20 guns & 5 merchant ships 3/1777. Blockaded in Charleston until 3/1778. Destroyed by explosion of magazine while in close action with HMS YARMOUTH, 64 guns, 3/7/1778 while covering escape of 2 SC Cruisers & several American merchant ships. Capt. Nicholas Biddle of RANDOLPH who, as youth, was midshipman in British Navy on same ship which Horatio Nelson was also serving as Midshipman.
