Walrus tusk engraved on front with 5 vignettes: pin-prick portrait of young girl & dog in garden setting; pin-prick scene of couple in horse-drawn carriage; home in pastoral setting; broadside portrait of full-rigged ship; & tropical scene featuring house with conical thatched roof. Image of woman after "Appearance of a lady in the new Bloomer costume" in "Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion," Aug. 19, 1851. Reverse of tusk bears full length pin-prick portrait of fashionably dressed woman wearing bloomers. "Bloomer" image after fashion plate from "Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion," Aug. 19, 1851. Sawtooth border around base. Piece is chipped & repaired at base, broken & repaired near tip, which also has hole drilled thru it. Engraved by Nathaniel Saxton Morgan ( - ), crew member aboard New London whaleship HANNIBAL, 1849-1851, (ex-packet, bu. 1821-1822, NYC, by Fickett & Crockett; abandoned in Cumberland Inlet, Davis Straits, 10/1861).
