6 x 8 glass negative photographed by Rosenfeld and Sons in 1915 off Larchmont Yacht Club, Larchmont, New York. Image of the 106'3" Herreshoff designed and built cutter RESOLUTE (built 1914 in Bristol, Rhode Island) and the 118' William Gardner design and George Lawley & Son Corporation built cutter VANITIE (built 1914 in South Boston, Massachusetts) out racing in a brisk wind. Visible in image: port bow view of RESOLUTE (to the far right), and VANITIE (in the background to the left) on port close reach under gaff-rigged mainsails, topsails, staysails and jibs, with a man climbing masthoops on RESOLUTE. In the distance are two unidentified boats, the shoreline, and light scattering of clouds. This image has been printed most often with VANITIE cropped out completely, as seen in A CENTURY UNDER SAIL, page 36. Handwritten on negative sleeve: "1221-S / Resolute + Vanitie(crossed out) / 1915 / )". CREDIT LINE: Mystic Seaport, Rosenfeld Collection.
