Signed "W.G.WOOD / 1902" in lower right corner. THISTLE (108ft) was built in Scotland and was a George Watson designed vessel. She was the America's Cup challenger 1887, by the Royal Clyde Yacht Club, and was sailed by Captain John Barr. VOLUNTEER (104ft.) was the US America's Cup 1887 defender. She was built by Pusey & Sons, and fitted and rigged by Geo. Lawley & Son. Her Captain during the America's Cup was Hank Haff.
