4 x 5 copy negative taken by Rosenfeld and Sons, of a drawing by Worden G. Wood. Port beam view of the cutters THISTLE and VOLUNTEER under sail at the America's Cup Race, September 27, 1887. Original drawing appears to have been pen and ink on paper. Surrounding detail include a barge in the foreground, a tug and several spectator vessels in background. Signed "W.G.WOOD / 1902" in lower right corner. THISTLE (108ft) was built in Scotland and was a George Watson designed vessel. She was the America's Cup challenger 1887, by the Royal Clyde Yacht Club, and was sailed by Captain John Barr. VOLUNTEER (104ft.) was the US America's Cup 1887 defender. She was built by Pusey & Sons, and fitted and rigged by Geo. Lawley & Son. Her Captain during the America's Cup was Hank Haff. Handwritten in pen on original negative sleeve: "Thistle + Volunteer / Inside Course - Sept 27, 1887".
