4x5 copy negative made by Rosenfeld and Sons from a book of images photographed by Nathaniel L. Stebbins. Image of GALATEA undersail, starboard bow view in 1886. GALATEA was a 100' British cutter built for the America's Cup 1886 challenge in 1885 by John Reid & Son Company of Glasgow, Scotland from designs by John J. Beavor-Webb. She was the sixth challenger for the America's Cup and lost two races to the defender MAYFLOWER in 1886. She was the second challenger owned by Lt. H. William Henn and the second Webb-designed challenger. This heavily built British boat was primarily a cruising cutter and was out-classed by her American opponent. This image was copied from a book of Nathaniel L. Stebbins images by the Rosenfelds. The Stebbins collection is currently owned by SPNEA, Garrison Gray Otis House, 141 Cambridge St., Boston, MA 02114-9990.
