Subject of image positively identified as the professional sculler, Charles Edward Courtney in a single rowing scull. Handwritten note on neg. sleeve: "William Gardner / 1 Broadway." Original Box 758. THE LOG OF MYSTIC SEAPORT, Summer, 2005, 56/1, states in an article by Goran Buckhorn titled, "Charles Courtney and the Decline of Professional Sculling in America", page 4, that the image was used in, "Look's "Courtney, Master Oarsman-Champion Coach," dates the image to 1879...". This image shows the new innovation of the "sliding seat" in use.
