8x10 nitrate negative photographed possibly by an unidentified photographer most likely in Oklahoma in December of 1919. Image of an oil field where crude oil and/or salt water is kept in pools in the ground. Salt ponds were created and used to put pressure on the oil underground so that is could be pumped out. In the pool in the foreground, pipes are leading to and from these pools and a partial view of the old well drilling shack to the right. The two pools in the background are covered with snow. Image is part of a series of photographs taken for or about Empire Refineries, Inc. owner of oil fields, refineries and railroad cars for oil transportation. Empire Refineries, Inc. also had places in Independence, Kansas and Ponca, Okmulgee, Oklahoma City and Cushing, Oklahoma and was a subsidiary of Cities Service Company.
