8 x 10 nitrate negative taken by Rosenfeld and Sons on April 24, 1924. View of a stateroom aboard the SS REPUBLIC. By the 1920s, even third-class passengers were housed in staterooms rather than open steerage bunkrooms. Here, four people have metal pipe berths with U.S. Shipping Board coverlets. There is no running water. Each wash basin is filled from a large pitcher and drained into a waste jug. A chamber pot on the painted deck under the bunks serves as a toilet at night. The sign above the mirror notes that life preservers are stowed overhead. Handwritten on original negative sleeve: "S/S REPUBLIC / interior / Box 1292". Photographer's camera visible in mirror in center of image.
