8x10 glass negative photographed by Charles Edwin Bolles in 1899 at the launching of COLUMBIA, the newest defender for the America's Cup challenge to be held that year. COLUMBIA was a 132' cutter designed by Nathanael G. Herreshoff and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island. She is seen here launched but not fitted out at the Herreshoff dock, bow view, tethered to the docks on either side of her. In the background are two work sheds, the one on the right is better to see the interior. Handwritten neg. sleeve info.: "Y58 / COLUMBIA / Box 6". Handwritten on emulsion side on glass edge: 1056 / COLUMBIA". CREDIT LINE: Mystic Seaport, Rosenfeld Collection, Charles Edwin Bolles photographer.
