Spectators on the docks and in pulling boats surround the vessel to the left and right as it is sliding down the ways and the U.S. yacht ensign flies at the vessel's stern. Two of the Herreshoff work sheds are in the background. DEFENDER was a 123' cutter designed by Nathanael G. Herreshoff and built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol Rhode Island in 1895 for the New York Yacht Club Syndicate in defense of the 1895 America's Cup. Handwritten neg. sleeve info.: "Y761 / Misc. Sloops / Box C2.". Stamped on sleeve: "Property of "YACHTING" / 38 PARK ROW / NEW YORK".
