5x7 safety copy negative made by Rosenfeld and Sons ca. 1958. Image of THISTLE, at rest, port bow/beam view. THISTLE was the Scottish America's Cup challenger against VOLUNTEER in 1887 by the Royal Clyde Yacht Club. She was a 108' gaff-rigged cutter built by D.& W. Henderson of Patrick on Clyde, Scotland in 1887 from designs by George L. Watson. Her captain in 1887 before he immigrated to America with his brother Charles was the shipmaster John Barr. THISTLE was sold after her 1887 loss to Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany who renamed her METEOR (the 1st of 5 of that name) in 1887 and rigged her as a schooner. The original image was copied by the Rosenfelds from a book published in 1887 by Edward Burgess titled, AMERICAN AND ENGLISH YACHTING, Plate II.
