8 x 10 gelatin silver print made from a 5 x 7 glass plate negative, taken by Rosenfeld and Sons on August 13, 1917. Starboard beam view of the section patrol craft SP-179, later YP-179, seen underway. She was a 108-foot motorboat, built at Morris Heights, New York, acquired by the Navy in May 1917, and commissioned in August 1917. During World War I she carried out coastal patrols in the 3rd Naval District, headquartered at New York. One of a small number of SP (Section Patrol) boats retained for peacetime service, she continued to operate in the 3rd Naval District after the war. Designated YP-179 in 1920, PRIVATEER was transferred to the U. S. Shipping Board in June 1930. (REF: US NAVY). Four sailors seen standing on stern of vessel.
