5x7 glass plate negative photographed by Rosenfeld and Sons in 1917 at a ceremony. View of 3 ladies, two in their 50's or 60's on either side of a very elderly woman, possibly in her 90's or older, seated on a viewing stand. Information handwritten on verso in pencil on negative: "Marianne Schurz - daughter / Miss Juessen - sister / Miss Juessen - niece". This elderly lady in the center is the sister of Marianne Juessen Schurz who came to the U.S. ca. 1856 and was the mother of Carl Schurz. One of the 2 other women is Marianne Schurz the daughter of Carl Schurz (1829-1906), a highly respected politician, journalist, senator, ambassador, etc. Her parents, Carl and Margaretha ,were married in Prussia in 1851 and moved to the U. S. in 1852. She was one of five children; Agatha, Marianne, Emma, Carl Lincoln and Herbert. The other lady is a niece of the Miss Juessen who was a sister of Marianne Juessen Schurz. All ladies are wearing heavy coats, gloves and decorated hats. The two women on either side also have corsages. In the background are many seated people. No original negative number on neg. envelope. Handwritten information: "Marianne Schurz / Miss Juessen / Box 186". 3x5 card in "News" file says, "Schurz, Carl, Monument", probably meaning the dedication ceremony of a monument to Carl Schurz.
