2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch emulsion on paper black-and-white photograph of black smoke over calm seas, circa 1942. The photo was probably taken from the stern of the USS DECATUR which was undergoing smoke screening exercises at sea. A large, thick, trail of black smoke is pictures hovering horizontally over a calm sea. A silouette of another miliary vessel is just visible on the horizon.
