4 x 5 inch emulsion on paper black-and-white photograph of a seaside vista in the Russell Islands, 1943. The photo is nicely framed with vegatation in the foreground, two tree trunks on either side, and tree fronds along the top. The center of the photo is of a bay with mountains in the background. There is one solitary motor launch heading to shore. Hand written on the back: "A Russel Island scene. These were the most beautiful islands in the solomons / Although they were hell to navigate / Looking across the water, miles away, you / could see the Jap Island of San Cristobal / with their seaplane base at Rekata Bay. / Lovely as these islands look the slant eyed / so and sos dropped a string of bombs about 400 yards ahead of us one day. The worst part of it was that we missed the *=*!!@!! / 4/43" This photo was sent home by Henry Strauss at that time.
