Color lithograph; USS HOLLAND (built 1896-1897) depicted on drydock, two men work on submarine while two men study blueprints; printed on bottom center "USS HOLLAND"; printed on bottom right "BUILT BY ELECTRIC BOAT, A DIVISION OF GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION"; printed on back "USS HOLLAND/ This little craft was the U.S. Navy's first submarine. Named for her/ inventor, John Philip Holland, she was officially accepted on April 11,1900,/ a date still celebrated by the Navy as the 'Submarine Birthday.' The Holland,/ which was intended only to serve as a coastal defense vessel, displaced 74/ tons and was 54 feet long. She had a beam of 10 feet. Armed with one/ torpedo tube and a pneumatic dynamite gun, she had a top surface speed/ of eight knots. Submerged she ran at five knots./ The Holland had a dual propulsion system, a storage battery-powered/ electric motor plus a gasoline engine. She was launched May 17, 1897."
