Color lithograph; USS SKIPJACK, E-1 (built 1909-1911) depicted cruising on the surface, canvas wind curtain surrounds conning tower, flags flying, steamship dpected in foggy background; printed on bottom center "USS SKIPJACK (E-1)"; printed on bottom right "BUILT BY ELECTRIC BOAT, A DIVISION OF GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION"; printed on back "USS SKIPJACK (E-1)/ Skipjack was the first United States submarine to cross the Atlantic/ Ocean. This historic crossing, between Newport, R.I., and Ponta Delgada/ in the Azores, was made in December of 1917. Later the Skipjack was joined/ by other American submarines and operated with U.S. Naval forces in Euro-/ pean waters during World War I. The 'E' class was the first equipped with/ radio and the first to be powered by diesel engines. The Skipjack was 135/ feet long with a beam of 14 feet, six inches. She displaced 340 tons and/ had a top surface speed of 14 knots. Armament consisted of four torpedo/ tubes. The Skipjack was luanched May 27, 1911." Enclosed in portfolio 2003.92.22.
