The first submarines with all-welded hulls (earlier vessels/ had riveted hulls), they embodied many features found later in the fleet types. These ships,/ along with the older 'S' class and a handful of newer vessels, held the line against Japanese/ naval power during the early days of the war. When war flamed across the Pacific, the Tarpon/ was on station in the Philippines. She immediately struck back and during 12 subsequent combat/ patrols she successfully sought out the enemy from Hawaii to the home waters of the Japanese/ Islands. Tarpon still serves with the Navy and is now berthed in New Orleans as a Naval/ Reserve training ship. She displaces 1,267 ons and has a top surface speed of 20 knots. Her/ wartime armament consisted of eight torpedo tubes and one deck gun. Tarpon was launched September 4, 1935." Enclosed in portfolio 2003.92.22.
