First day cover for the U.S.S. CASSIN (DD-372, built 1935), destroyer; front of envelope has no cachet; two stamps on right, top stamp features portraits of George Washington on left and Nathanael Greene on right with Mount Vernon in the middle, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES/ POSTAGE/ WASHINGTON GREEN/ MOUNT VERNON/ 1 ONE CENT 1"; bottom stamp features portraits of John Paul Jones on left and John Barry on right with three square-rigged vessel in the middle; stamps postmarked "U.S.S./ 4/ JUL/ 1937/ P.M./ CASSIN." and "NAVY YARD/ PHILA PA"; stamped address on front "V. C. Shank/ Box 55, Route 1/ Hampton, Va."; handwritten on back "477". The U.S.S. CASSIN was destoyed by explosions on the U.S.S. DOWNES during the attack on Pearl Harbor, she was later salvaged (see correspondence file).
