CHEW (DD-106, built 1918), destroyer; front of envelope has no cachet; stamp on right features portrait of Nathan Hale, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ NATHAN HALE/ 1/2 CENT 1/2"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ JAN/ 29/ P.M./ 1941/ CHEW" and "PEARL HARBOR/ HAWAII", also postmarked "U.S.S. CHEW/ JAN/ 29/ 1941/ PARCEL POST" and "FIRST DAY POST/ SERVICE". The U.S.S. CHEW was undamaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor and managed to down one Japanese plane (see correspondence file).
