MARYLAND (BB-46, built 1920), battleship; front of envelope has no cachet; stamp on right depicts George Washington's headquarters in Newburgh, N.Y. in 1783, house set in clearing on river, flag pole flying American flag, printed on stamp "U.S. POSTAGE/ WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS/ NEWBURGH, N.Y./ 1783-1933/ THREE 3 CENTS"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S. MARYLAND/ FEB 22 1936/ 9.00 A.M." and "WASHINGTON'S BIRTHDAY"; no address. The U.S.S. MARYLAND was hit by two bombs during the attack on Pearl Harbor, she shot down one torpedo plane (see correspondence file).
