MONAGHAN (DD-354, built 1935), destroyer; front of envelope has cachet in green ink, features head-on view of an unidentified navy ship underway with another in the background, printed clockwise on left in square around image "1938 MANEUVERS/ PACIFIC FLEET/ ALASKA TO HAWAII/ UNITED STATES"; stamp on right features portraits of Stephen Decatur and Thomas MacDonough with a square-rigged vessel, possibly the U.S.S. SARATOGA between them, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ DECATUR/ MACDONOUGH/ UNITED STATES SARATOGA/ 2 TWO CENTS 2"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S./ APR/ 12/ 1938/ A.M./ MONAGHAN" and "PEARL HARBOR"; address typed on front "James W. Brumbaugh/ 3036 N. Farwell Ave./ Milwaukee, Wis."; stamped on back "SUNK". The U.S.S. MONAGHAN sank one midget submarine with depth charges during the attack on Pearl Harbor (see correspondence file).
