First day cover for the U.S.S. PERRY (DMS-17, built as DD-340, 1921), minesweeper; front of envelope has cachet in gray ink featuring profile of unidentified navy ship surrounded by decorative border drawn to look like rope, anchor and wheel on bottom, printed on left "WELCOME TO/ SEATLE/ FLEET WEEK/ JULY - 17-22/ - 1933 -/ JOHN PAUL JONES/ CHAPTER NO 2/ U.S.C.S." and artisit's initials at bottom "D.C.B." (possibly D.C. Bartley, addressee of envelope); stamp on right features portrait of Washington by Gilbert Stuart from a painting made at Germantown, Pa., in 1796, known as the Atheneum portrait, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ 1732/ 1932/ WASHINGTON/ 2 CENTS 2"; stamps postmarked "U.S.S./ JUL/ 16/ A.M./ 1933/ PERRY"; address stamped on front "D.C. BARTLEY/ Green Lake Station/ Seattle, Wash."; stamped on back "SUNK". The U.S.S. PERRY shot down one enemy plane during the attack on Pearl Harbor and patrolled the harbor entrance (see correspondence file).
