SCHLEY/ DESTROYER 103/ RECOMMISSIONED/ SAN DIEGO, CALIF."; stamp on right features portrait of Nathan Hale, printed on stamp "UNITED STATES POSTAGE/ NATHAN HALE/ 1/2 CENT 1/2"; stamp postmarked "U.S.S. SCHLEY/ 18/ NOV/ 1940/ REGISTERED". The U.S.S. SCHLEY responded with small arms fire during the attack on Pearl Harbor even though being overhauled (see correspondence file).
