Sewing box; Wooden sewing box; from the collection of Captain Richard C. Mears (1829-1899); wooden box, used as a sewing caddy and storage container; lid is completely removable, and has a small nob on the top to help lift off; box is divided widthwise into two separate compartments; one compartment is completely open, most likely used for storage of sewing tools and supplies; second compartment is divided again into an upper and lower portion (though only a slight difference in height); lower portion has five, tall, upright spindles, while upper portion has seven shorter upright spindles, all of which were most likely used as holders for spools of thread; front of box features thirteen staggered holes, most likely for thread from spools to pass through in order to keep organized and from becoming tangled with eachother.; a small wooden handle positioned on each side of the box.
