Gleason’s Pictorial [Gleason’s Pictorial Drawing Room Companion], published in Boston, November 12, 1853; a weekly illustrated periodical of 16 pages per issue; this issue is of special interest for the image of an “Equestrian Portrait of the Emperor of Russia,” an unascribed wood engraving on page 308; adapted from a painting by Alexander Petrovich Schwabe (Russian, 1818-1872), 1843, depicting Nicholas I (1796-1855), Romanov Czar of Russia (1825-1855); the engraving is the original source of the image on an anonymously engraved scrimshaw sperm whale tooth, accession number 2001.128.3.
