Colored Postcard. From the collection of S. Clyde King. Image on front is a colored image of a photograph taken in 1903 by H.S. Hutchinson & Co. (see 1947.1596.10). Image shows men cutting into a sperm whale on the whaling bark CALIFORNIA. Red text at top on front “2056- Sperm Whaling,/ “Junk” nearly clear, this/ is the heaviest part of/ a Sperm Whale,/ New Bedford, Mass.”. Back of card is unused with a divided back. Text in bottom left corner of back reads “CUTTING IN A SPERM WHALE/ “Junk” is nearly clear. This is with the exception of/ the case the most valuable portion of the whale as/ well as the heaviest.”
