Colored Postcard. From the collection of S. Clyde King. Image on front is a colored image of a photograph taken in 1903 by H.S. Hutchinson & Co. (see 1947.1596.20). Image shows men cutting into a right whale on the whaling bark CALIFORNIA. Red text at top on front “2057 - Right Whaling. Attaching chain to head/ also shows right whale's "Bonnet",/ New Bedford, Mass.”. Back of card is unused with a divided back. Text in bottom left corner of back reads “CUTTING IN A RIGHT WHALE/ Cutting hole through scalp for head chain showing/ the right whale's "bonnet" and the bone exposed/ by the dropping away of lower lip.”
