5X7 safety negative photographed by Rosenfeld and Sons off New London, CT, July 21, 1941 at the time of the first "Plywood Derby" which trialed the PT boats from thrtee manufactures hoping to win bids to build the Navy's PT boat fleet. The image is of the Navy's entry into the trials, PT 8 running at moderate speed and viewed from the starboard beam at a medium distance. Of note, the boat is armed only with its torpedo tubes and is missing the rest of the ordinance required of the PT boats in the trials and subsequent combat ready craft. Also of interest is the tri-colored hull of this boat which is distinct from the other PT boat manufacturers. Stamped neg. sleeve: "101766F / 7/21/41 / Elco Works / PT-8 at New London / [Box] 4691-4692". CREDIT LINE: Mystic Seaport, Rosenfeld Collection.
