10x8 gelatin silver print made by Rosenfeld and Sons in April of 1943. View of two soldiers seated in an amphibious landing craft called a DUKW #353, on a beach, near Fort Ord, California. DUKW's were known familiarly as "Duck's". The design was by Rod Stephens, Dennis Puleston, Palmer Cosslett Putnam in 1942 and they were built by General Motors Corporation. The DUKW was useful in World War II for landing troops and supplies on beaches in Sicily, Normandy, and in the Pacific. A DUKW was a 2-1/2 ton truck capable of carrying 5,000 lbs., had a speed of 5 knots at sea and 50 mph on land. The an acronym DUKW stands for: D=1942, U=utility truck, K=front wheel drive, W=2 rear driving axles.
